Is This a Thing?

What movies or TV series have you watched more than 5 times?

What movies or TV series have I watched more than 5 times? None. I guess my attention span never allows me to watch something that long. Most of the time I can’t complete a whole movie, definitely not a series. Do people really watch things over and over? To me that would be boring and predictable. I have listened to a song more than 5 times. That’s comparable right? 🤣

  1. So, I can answer this as someone who has watched at least 20 different movies over 100 times each – shocking, right?? I’ve done this since I was a kid, and as an adult, it’s come to my attention that this phenomenon can be attributed to anxiety. In a way, it’s creating a predictable, cozy pattern for yourself where you know the narrative backwards and forwards…no surprises.

I’m not sure if this is true for everyone who does this, but it certainly hit the mark for me! Thanks for asking the question! 🙂

  2. I watch Groundhog Day every February 2nd. Funny how every time I watch it, I see a new way to interpret it. I think part of it is what some call the reader response critique (in the case of movies, it would be viewer response). It posits that all of the experiences you have had since the last reading/viewing will change how you see the static story. I have also seen The Wizard of Oz many times and for some reason I could watch The Notebook over and over again.

  3. Most movies are akin to junk food and microwave popcorn. But there are a rare few that, like Mozart’s 41st symphony, can be experienced many times. Field of Dreams is no less impactful today as it was 37 years ago. The nuance of The Remains of the Day is no less artful than Rembrandt on a canvass. More interesting, is how your perspective on “film considered art” changes with age. But you’re right, most movies aren’t worth a single view.
