What is a Writer

What is a writer?

Wikipedia defines writer as “a person who uses written words in different writing styles, genres and techniques to communicate ideas, to inspire feelings and emotions, or to entertain.” In my opinion anyone who enjoys writing is indeed a writer. I used to deny myself the label of being a writer. I felt as though I wasn’t good enough or I hadn’t written enough to be considered a writer. I felt as though I had not made it to that level of prestige, despite the fire that burned inside of me that demanded I put words on a paper.

On my profiles through the years I would leave off that title and hide that part of me. Sure, I enjoyed writing but most of the time I would deem my writing as trash and toss them away. I know now that was a silly thought to have. I am and always have been a writer since the moment my little brain could string together sentences. It is a passion of mine that has always showed up in my life regardless of how hard I tried to tell myself otherwise. You don’t have to be a professional to be a writer. You don’t have to have some lavish career that revolves around writing to be a writer. You don’t even have to be great at writing to be a writer. You simply need the undeniable desire and the will to try. For anyone out there feeling similar to how I was, like you’re not good enough to be a writer. I’m here to tell you to stop denying yourself simple pleasure and just write!

  1. Sometimes the words just burn to be written. Other times you have something to say, but the idea of putting it to print, only to have it misunderstood, or because the tone of what you must write is not the tone you want to write, can stop you from saying what you know must be said. Yes Heather, do not deny that you are a writer, and also, do not deny yourself both the joy and anguish it will bring.
