What’s the first impression you want to give people?
What’s the first impression I want to give people? The first impression I want to give versus the first impression I tend to give are usually very different. I am an introverted person that cherishes peace and happiness, so naturally I keep to myself. My “watch and observe” personality tends to be perceived as snooty and stuck up. I want to give a good first impression but usually my awkwardness is received in the opposite manner.

I am rather similar, being both introverted and totally deaf. When I first came to this care home, it was veery hard to fit in or make friends. people find writing to communicate too difficult ususally and I am hopeless at lip-reading! So I decided to share lots of smiles and find small things to comment on to as many as I can. giving compliments, asking easy questions etc. Although this is nothing but small talk, it is not as meaningless as I used to think. Everyone engaged is recognised and valued and the warmth is infectious. The result is that although I don’t have any closr friends here, I do fit in and have connection with quite a few residents. It was a conscious decision to do this. If I had not, I am sure I would have been thought of as snooty etc.

That is a beautifully insightful comment, Lorna!
It takes real courage and self-awareness to figure out a new way to connect when the usual methods don’t work, especially while navigating being an introvert and being deaf.
What an inspiring approach-using smiles, warmth, and small, genuine comments to foster a welcoming environment. It sounds like you’ve created a ripple effect of kindness that benefits everyone. That’s a wonderful legacy to build wherever you go!
I’m so glad you’ve found a way to fit in and make those meaningful connections. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Thank you Heather and welcome to Times of Transition. I am intrigued at some of the posts you have liked as they are rather unorthodox and agnostic? Do post a little…or a lot! about yourself on our profiles page,, ,apart from me, there is nobody else there yet,
